  • downshift problems Argo

I have a 97 Vanguard 2 that I just put a 23hp briggs in. I have a stock primary clutch from a 2002 conquest 20hp kawi and my stock secondary clutch (machine originally had a 16hp briggs). I also have 25" rawhides. This machine is an animal in low range, but when I try to run high range the secondary doesn't like to shift down for one reason or another. I have tried cleaning it thoroughly and only noticed a minor difference. With 340 hours could the stock spring be worn out? Is there a stiffer spring that would help? I know the engine has enough torque to run high range without almost coming to a stop on turns. Any help would be appreciated.

Does anybody know where I can find a new secondary clutch spring?

I got no help on the spring but on another note, I was talking to the guy who sold you the vanguard and he told me today what you did to it. I looked at the pictures in the gallery and was wondering what kind of clearance do you have between those 25" tires? hard to tell from the pictures but looks tight. also when you put the 23 vanguard in what did you do about the exhaust? It looks rusty and maybe the original from the 16 vanguard? I thought for the 23 you needed a specific exhaust for it or can you just use the 16 or 18 vanguard exhaust? i would like to see a side shot of those 25's on there.

There is very minimal clearance between the tires. I bought the used set of 25s from Castro a while back and played around with putting different tires on different axles until I found a set-up that doesn't rub with proper air pressure. The tires have roughly half tread I would say. They measure around 23.5" tall. I will get a picture of them this weekend, but they all-but touch if you don't pay attention when airing them up.

I bought the 23 vanguard having been taken out of an 09 frontier, so it had that exhaust with it. I don't think the stock 16hp exhaust would fit. The one thing that I am going to address is the fact that old muffler was tucked up in the heat shield, where this muffler is right above the clutch. I just put my roll cage on so I think I will route the exhaust up the side of the cage with a muffler outside the engine compartment, and use the muffler I have now to fabricate a y-pipe. I just don't want all the heat in the engine compartment.

littlefoot, a new spring should be available from any argo dealer, tho with so few hours on the clock that may not make much difference. Have you done what is referred to as a rock doctor tune on your driven clutch? For most, this has been the most effective way to keep the clutch back shifted to a lower drive ratio in high range. // RR
