  • T20-I'm a believer

Well I finally was able to test drive my max 2 subplanted in to a scrambler body and my first expereience with a t20 is WOW!-It really is a nice transmission and you can feel the torque. The only thing I dont like is the pushing of the twin sticks f-n-r gear selector to get into forward or reverse-once I figured it out I did a couple doughnuts in the yard.I have an amphicat and a scrambler and I do realize now why the max is still in business building these fine machines!

Glad to hear you got it in and running Alex. Now you need to post up some pictures and a "how to" for the other scrambler owners who give up on the stock drive system.
For that matter, it would apply to any of the vintage machines with slip clutch type transmissions. Good job

Excellent! It's a night and day difference driving a non T-20 machine and then getting behind the sticks of one. What an eye opener that must have been. The Scramblers look really cool with nice sweeping lines but their drive train is pretty bad. A T-20 swap is great for them. Do you have any pics of your rig? We'd love to check it out.

Yes,I need to do that,I did end up buying a new 13hp predator engine from harbor freight-I am quite happy with it,I was even able to use the scrambler gas pedal and throttle linkage.I should mention how I bought 2 good used 22x11x8 atv tires still mounted on the old honda split rims.I took a balloon tire apart-cut the inner rim in half and it actually fit perfectly inside the stock honda 100mm rim.I mig welded it so for now I am able to still use the 3 lug axles.Buggyman I never forgot the way your max felt when I drove it and your the whole reason I ended up doing this project. The max frame is a very tight fit in the scrambler tub-I used a porta power jack to spread the scrambler body the 1 extra inch it needed in width for the max frame to fit.I also made sure to add reinforcements where needed on the max frame like others have done.I dont have a camera now-it sounds lame I need to get one.I keep losing my cell phones so I just keep buying the extra cheap ones with no camera. The scramblers red body has actually faded to a point that it looks purple,I just dont know what to do-leave it purple or try to get the color back-.The only thing that scares me about the max is the fact that the axles are held in place with set screws.

Same thing with the Attex and the Hustler, and many other AATVs. Of all the AATVs I've owned, I've never had one come out, so it's not an issue at all.

Now you need a roll cage and some custom paint on that purple machine...take it to the races at Ashtabula and have a "flyin purple Argo eater"

There is a fix for the bearing retainer ring .....add a spacer tube (PVC pipe on my bigfoot, steel on the other one) between the bearing and the sprocket tube. Then add a split locking collar on the inside of the sprocket tube. If the locking collar fails. the pinned sprocket tube still holds the axle in place. If the pin shears too, the split locking collar holds it.
The bigfoot has the splined axles, so its a little different (no pin), but same concept.

Sounds like a awesome project! Cool styling scrambler body with the drive train to use it.
Glad yo got it going. The 13hp ungovern is not really any thing different then the 16. Should be a good reliable motor.
