  • Hustler T20 question

When I picked up my Huslter which i was told was a mid 80's model I noticed that the tranny was only hooked up on one side (left side), and when shifting into foward/reverse it cathes a bit which Ive read is normal. But the issue is on the right side when i move the shift lever on the t20 by hand (sorry for the non technical terms, still learning) it moves freely back to reverse and smoothly and easily to the front with no restrictions at all. Is this normall if one side isnt hooked up? Ive read 20 pages worth of t-20 write ups on this site and couldnt find anything similar.
    Thanks

Sounds like a detent spring could be busted. A couple dollar part from Recreatives. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

The only bad news is that you'd have to take it apart to fix it, but a T-20 rebuild isn't all that hard to do.

diamond shifters 004.jpgIs the right side actually shifting when you move the lever...does it drive the wheels?
My first thought is your diamond shifter has sheared the pin off, and is not moving the collar inside at all.

I also noticed this when I took the shifter off my t20 one side takes some pressure to shift and the other side moves freely. The last time I ran my colt the t20 worked fine.

Do you have to take the t20 apart to get to the diamond shifter?

Nope, the diamond shifters will pull out once their retaining device is removed, but the detent spring is not accessible in the same fashion. You need to dig into it for that.

Heres the right side diamond shifter and from what I read and the pics I saw last night this isnt a good thing.
Dont know how to make the pic bigger, but its sheared off for sure which brings me to another question. When you push on the sticks to go farward it stutters a bit and jumps, can this be the cause of that as well?

I can't tell if its snapped off or gone. Its hard to see the pic even with the link. You can drill it out and slip a new one in if its snapped, but it should still pull out without drilling if you can grip anything.

Looks like you should be able to get that out. They are just little pins that slide in. A real cheap easy fix.

You could call Recreative Industries and get a brand new one from the factory, or you could take the other side out and have a machine shop cut a piece of a rod and round the ends for you. Its basically round stock, but with ground down ends. You could even make the yourself if need be.
