  • How high?

Lifted the front of my Max IV with the engine hoist and got it to about 45 degrees but only managed to get about a pint of water and porridge out of the transmission.

The previous owner had stored the machine in his field and allowed it to fill up with water for about two years. When I removed the two plugs I discovered that the breather had been put in the bottom drain hole!

Anyway, had a quick look inside with a borescope and cannot see any oxidation so quickly filled with virgin ATF, ran on blocks for 10 minutes and drained again. Whilst I got most of the fluid out, I think some remains inside.

How high do I need to tilt the vehicle, I have the means to suspend it from a tree if needed?

45 degrees is about the angle you need to change the fluid......BUT, if you got any water at all out of there, the trans should be split open and inspected.
It only takes a very short time to start rusting, and that rust may not be apparent in driving the machine. If the drums rusted it will wear the bands prematurely. If the bearings rusted is will reduce their life also. Rust anywhere inside will contaminate the fluid and reduce the life of all parts. Please tear that thing apart and check it out.
