  • Sticking in gear?

    Ok.....

I finally got to go do some serious riding on my 6x6 after having it a WHOLE WEEK.

Anyways...everything was fine, i sprayed off the machine to get the mud off of the inside of the tub and then all of a sudden the trans started sticking in gear....I can take a hammer and tap the linkage and it will go in and out, and sometimes its fine. But it does with engine off or engine on, and everything else seems to be functioning.

I talked to jim (thebuggyman) and he said it sounded like a linkage problem....as in, the linkage is allowing the diamond shifter to move to much and its basically binding the linkage.

It defenatly is a linkage problem, i can grab the diamond shifter and shift it by hand just fine, even with the linkage still attached????

But it sticks if i try to shift it with the levers. UNLESS, i dont go down all the way??

    Help, im confused...

I think Jim pointed you in the right direction. Look at the angle that the linkage is pushing on the diamond shifters. Most likely the linkage attached to the diamond shifter is pushing against the diamond shifter instead of pushing it back. Play around with that angle and it should shift better.

split shifter.jpg After thinking about this a little more Dustin, I have something for you to try. Where the horizontal bar attaches to the rods that push the diamond shifters, there is a piece of flat steel. Bend the flat steel out towards the tires, until it nearly rubs the frame. With any luck that will relax the angle, and combined with a small spacer between the diamond shifter and trans, it should work just fine.

          Thanks!
They are pretty brute pieces and hard to screw up if built right and running the proper fluid.

I am thinking i might try to make some sort of adjustable linkage out of some threaded rod and a coupler....if i figure it out ill post pics

I wish I could explain it..... The only thing that comes to mind is "the T-20 dance". T-20's are not synchronized, and require rocking the machine, pulling back on the sticks, engaging the clutch, or a combination of the three, to get the gears to move inside until they mesh. This is probably the best reason to split the shifter, so only one side has to mesh at a time. It takes a little time to get used to, but then it will be second nature to you.

I dont know lol, it was bound up even after i drove it back into the barn....i guess what bothers me is not knowing what caused it...i guess ill just take a hammer on the trail with me incass it ever does it again atleast i can shift gears

If it does come down to having to hammer the diamonds into/out of gear, do it very, VERY gently (but an appropriate fix is absolutely necessary....) I've pulled shifters out that look like they've been maniuplated with a 12 pound sledge. It's not difficult to shear a pin or rip the side out of the shift collar.

No, i just took a small claw hammer and tapped super gentle.
