  • Partial rebuild T20

I have a question about the t20 that I Put back together...I had the 4 bands relined and replaced the o rings on the plungers and diamond shifters...I lubed the plungers with vaseline when I pulled them back ito the case from the outside..I adjusted the screw on the plungers trying to keep the channel vertical when I put the trans back in the max. I also set the screws so there would only be 5/16 of travel between the case and bottom of channel ..The springs are on that pull the sticks forward and are nice and even..Shifting is smooth on the trans from forward ,neutral and reverse.. When I push the sticks forward to go forward its almost like they go over a little speed bump. Both the right and left. The plungers move about 3/8 into the case and are probably 1/8 below flush of the case when pulled out..So they travel about 1/2 inch into the case..I wish I would have checked the distance of travel to where the oring comes out on the inside of the case..I know that would ruin the oring going back in from what I read.. I did have this issue before the rebuild on the left side only but after I tried to adjust it, since the band was not stopping me on that side... Help !

    Hey JimmyB,

Reading over your thread, is the ultimate problem the "speed bump" sensation you get when you push the sticks forward? Do you here a little "click" from the channels when this happens? If this is the case the little "click" is normal on the T20s with the channel style plunger connectors. I don't think that 1/2" into the case is too far to travel for the plunger o-rings. How "tight" are your laterals? How much travel between engage and brake do you have?

      Hi Mike,
Yes that is exactly what happens a bump and click. They are tight. The bottom plungers are 1/8 from being flush to the case with the sticks being pulled by the springs and the top 3/8 to 1/2 inside the case..There is no thread showing on adjustment where it connects to the uprights..
Not sure about engage and brake.. I thought it was just no brake or brake.. Sounds like I'm not doing the adjustment right...

If you pull the seat/floor assy, and watch the "U" channel as you work the sticks, you will see that channel pull away from the case, then pop back. This creates an annoying clack, and less precise movement of the plungers. The root of the problem is the newer style t-20's with the "U" channels were meant for that channel to rock on the front of the case.
The old style T-20's had a pivot in their "pop cycle stick" plunger bar. With the pivot, when one plunger is pulled out, also pushes the other plunger in. With a "U" channel type, there is nothing to push that second plunger in....it has to rely on the band to pull it back. "POP" "CLACK"
The only real fix is to add pivots.
