  • T20 Bands Right vs Left Side?

I just got my transmission bands back from transmission crafters today and they are listed as 2 right bands and 2 left bands. So assuming that the right vs left side maters when I reinstall them how do I tell them apart? And what side of the transmission is considered the left or right side?

The left side has the secondary clutch.

I've made the comment before that you cannot get the bands in wrong.......apparently I was incorrect, you can overlap them.

So it doesn't matter what side the bands go back in to then?

If you look close at the bands, they spiral in opposite directions. Put the left side bands in the left case half, and the rights in the right half.

The first band starts at the case half anchor pin and spirals to the plunger. Put the sleeve on the pin, and then the second band will start at the plunger and spiral to the anchor pin on top of the sleeve. This is the point where people have mixed which band went to which plunger.....make sure the bands do not overlap.

Ok thanks for your help. I'll be putting it back together as soon as I get the shift levers out and replace the seals.

Easy way to ID bands is hold end of band pointing at you. If it wraps to your left it goes in the left or driven clutch side. Be carefully installing the plungers they are easy to spread at the pins and will gall the aluminum holes if to tight. Thr split pins should be installed with the split toward the band or straight away. If installed with the split up or down the pressure of the band pulling can work them out and damage the case. I always check the slip fit after bands are installed without o-rings installed. If you get into trouble there is a lot of helpfull folks on this forum.

Thanks I was wondering about putting those pins back in. I got the shift levers out today and removed the shift collars. The detent spring was broke on the left side and my pliers wouldn't fit to remove the lock rings under the shift colars. So I'll be calling recreatives tomorrow to get a new detent spring and find a smaller pair of pliers then I should be good to go.
