    T20 broken mounting bolts

    T20 question!
I have two broken bolts in the T20, previous owner appears to have 'worked' on them but left them un-repaired.

The question is; are these blind 3/8" holes or are they thru bolts from the inside.

The trouble with retirement is.... I never get a day off !!!!

I have found them to be 'blind' - they have a bottom to the hole.

they are blind. a left hand drill and an "easy out" will probablyget you where you need to be, or you can try welding a nut to the remaining section of bolt. this gives you something to turn it by, and the heat from welding causes the steel to expand a bit. when it cools it can brake loose any corrosion. If the threads are hurt, use a helicoil to replace them

        hi
The mounting bolts are broken i assume from vibration .
If not already installed a brace running from the top mounting bolt down to the chassis on a 45 degree angle will help stabalise transmission when under load .

U may need to fill holes with an epoxy filler [eg locktight devcon ] and redrill then helicoil . Helicoils and recoils do come std fitment on some industrial alluminium items .

Thanks everyone, got the 1st one out.
          .
Used a transfer punch to find the center of the stud, drilled it with a 1/4" bit (the holes are drilled 1-1/8" deep at the factory), filled it with Kroll oil, gave it a little heat from the torch to get the oil boiling, let it sit for an hour, then gave it abit more heat to expand the aluminum, tapped the easy-out in and with the help of a long handle tap 'T' wrench for even pressure, twisted it out. Chased the threads with a tap for good measure.
          .
Hope the 2nd one comes out just as easy tomorrow.
          .
The unit has the support brackets on each side of the case down to the frame.
Looks like someone broke the bolt, tried to weld a nut on it, failed and gave up

I was just out in my garage and had the same problem with the 1st t-20 I put in my Max IV. I snapped 2 of the bolts off in the left side of the tranny. I decided to give the old welding a bolt on trick a try. I used a bolt not a nut, but with a few tack welds both bolts spun out really easily. Mind you my bolts were put in the day before they snapped, but they usually snap when they have loosened up a bit. If the loosening is the cause for the breakage, they should come out easy. At least in theory.
