  • Should the secondary clutch spinn at idle

    Hi,

I just put the driver clutch back into the conquest today here is the vid:

Something is bothering me...In my mind, it would be best if the secondary is not turning at idle...so we can engage the transmission without grinding noise...

The secondary is turning on my conquest and if i try to put it in gear slowly it make a grinding noise...If i engage it fast enough there is almost no sound...Is this normal?

    Thanks.

Is your idle turned down as low as possible without stalling? Is there enough deflection in your belt? Both things will cause your drive to engage prematurely.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

Yes.. Start the engine with the trans in Neutral and slap it into Reverse, then move it briskly into Low or High depending on the gear you wish to use. Always straight to Reverse first. That is how it is supposed to be shifted and is illustrated in the owners manual. Sounds counter intuitive.. but its correct.

Don't worry if the secondary spins some, as soon as you put it in gear it will stop.

        Nice first step

To answer your question: Yes, that's normal with the caveat that you are running idle below engagement RPM and the advice to run idle as slow as practical. Mine is at around 650 RPM.

With a little tinkering, you can get the secondary to stop spinning "most" of the time, but it's very easy to slap it into reverse first, then into low or high. It works.
Even if you just shift with authority into forward it will work.
I spent the time tinkering, and both my machines now idle low enough to not make the secondary spin at idle.

And if none of those ideas work, build a simple break for the secondary... Or shut it off and restart it in gear... Every time an Argo trans "grinds" you speed up the time frame to have it start popping out of gear... Good luck
