  • Idler Chain Too tight?? 99 Conquest

Hi All, I recently picked up a 99 Conquest. I've replaced all the chains and upon firing up i noticed that the right side doesnt want to roll/spin. With a lot of gas it work run foward about 10 inches but after that its just the left side that rolls freely. I checked the brake- its clearing the drum.

I believe the issue is with the idler chain. It took me close to 5 hours to get the idler chain on with modified needle nose. i couldnt seem to get the transmission to drop all the way. It looks like it could go an 1/8 inch down. The idler chain on the right side is tight but has about the 1/8 inch of slack like the service manual recommended. The other idler chain on the left side has close to 1/2 inch of slack and it rolls without problem. My question is do you think that my idler chain can be too tight? I dont remember there being a problem with the wheels spinning until the idler chain was installed. I dont want to remove the chain unless i narrow it down to the chain.

In regards to dropping the trans i could loosen the front bolt no problem, the back bolt i was able to get the nut off but wasnt able to get the bolt head loosend. i tried for over an hour but part of the frame is bent right at the bolt and it interferes with the ratchet. I tried banging it through from the other side with no luck. I screwed down the other bolts as recommended by the service manual to lower the trans.

If its not the idler chain do you have any other ideas? i'm able to roll both sets of tires with my hands but the right side does has slightly more resistance than the left side. If it is the idler chain whats the solution? My first thought was add another link and raise it up until i have even tightness?

As to the drive the Argo trans in your machine has a differential. if you had the machine in the air and only one side drove it's probably normal, had you applied the brake to the other side even partially the right should have drove. It is much easier for the trans to spin the whole differential than the individual pinions and gears.

There are actually 3 bolts in the powerpack, though some don't see the third because it's under the engine, you may have to loosen the front nut. Or it could be that the square washer on the rear bolt has turned from square to diamond which will not let the powerpack drop all the way.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

        Brakes, brakes, brakes 99 Conquest

Hey guys, Got to drive my Argo for the first time yesterday. My hardwork is paying off.

So it was my first time driving one and obviously it was a little hard to get used too. One thing i noticed was that it had a hard time turning right- it seemed to turn left on a dime but turning right took a lot of effort- i had to really rev the engine. Any thoughts?

I recently installed all new chains and took off the brakes pads on the right side and reinstalled- i didnt mess with the brakes on the left side. Also i dont see how i would remove the brake assemby from the Tranny- in the service manual they show two simple bolts. My Conquest has a circular shaped bolt head that appears to runs through the brake assembly and into the tranny. I dont see how you remove that bolt as its behind the disc....

Any ideas why it wouldnt like to turn right?

There is a hole in each disk that you can line up to the bolt just turn it. Easiest way is jack it completely off ground and slowly spin tires by hand.
