  • Excessive drive belt wear and coming off clutch

Hey guys...I'm getting excessive wear on the outside edges of my drive belt and the belt keeps comes off the clutches when I'm riding. This is on a 04 Argo Bigfoot.

I've already replaced the belt twice and looking at the belt yesterday (when it came off again) it's all chewed up once again.

Seems this problem started happening after I had an alternator installed earlier this year so I'm thinking the clutch alignment or belt tension is off if they pulled the engine out to do the install.

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue??

    Thanks
    Paul

Hi Paul. It does sound like something is misaligned. Replace the belt again and this time realign the clutches and make sure you have proper belt tension. Also check to make sure that neither of your clutches is wobbling badly as they turn.

Ok thanks Mike for the advice!

In terms of realigning the clutches..how do you do that on the argo as I thought they weren't adjustable? Do I shim the drive shaft with a washer/retaining ring??

I'm also wondering if the addition of the alternator introduced some wobble into the main drive shaft which I'll have to check...anyone heard of this problem after installing the alternator?

      Thanks

Most of our machines allow you to adjust the position of the motor to get the clutches to line up properly. Since your motor was pulled, I would guess that it needs to be adjusted. The alternator itself shouldn't have introduced the wobble but you never know what someone else did when installing it. Just start the motor and watch it.

Who put the alternator on and is it on the clutch side? The Briggs kit,s wre designed by Argo to go on the recoil side which needs to be removed and a pto pulley put on, if it's on the clutch side the belt is probably way out of alignment.

The alternator was installed correctly by an argo dealer. I'll check the clutch alignment this weekend and see if I can narrow it done to some kind of misalignment.

              Thanks guys!
