  • New bands verse Re-lined bands

So question for you all, recently I had snapped a t-20 band driving slightly eratic ..... So went and bought a new band from recreatives seeing as I live so close and decided to send the other 3 out to Transmission crafters to get relined seeing as they were all about half worn. The thing is, the new band has Black friction material on it and the ones that I had relined have red friction material on them which is what was originally on them. Should I worry about one or the other being more "grabby" then the other? I thought that someone had said that recreatives went to a different banding material but I just dont remember what the change was for. If anyone could please fill me in i'd appreciate it

The new material does not have as much chatter as the old stuff. It is not supposed to need the limited slip additive like most of us currently use.
l like to buy stuff and no I don't do payments!

The new bands with great without the additive. I don't think you will be able to tell the difference with one new band. I can tell that the buffalo truck with new bands grabs with less stick pressure. Run diff additive to keep the red bands quiet.

That's kind of what I figured id have to do is still run the additive. I seen someone once before was soaking the bands in tranny fluid prior to install. Is this necessary or not? Don't see many people talkin about it. And has anyone ran the trans-x additive from advanced auto parts or should I use GM additive only?

Whats the costs of new black bands? Are relined bands just as good? Do relined bands last just as long? Thanks.

New is almost always better than rebuilt items.....it's just a question of how much better, and is it worth the extra money.

In the case of bands: Modern bands have metal that is 0.010" thicker. With the relined, you run the risk of metal fatigue and snapping a band. However, the cost difference is quite large with new bands being well over twice the cost of relined.

The band lining lasts a long time, and I doubt I doubt any one person has worn out enough to give an accurate estimate of longevity for comparison.

I just paid $106 for a brand new band from recreatives and only $35 dollars a piece to have bands relined through transmission crafters. My opinion to you rusty-gunn would also be to just have the bands relined as thebuggyman1 has already hinted towards

Surfer dude already bought them. The question is if he would be able to tell that one is different with feel of the sticks.

Thank you larry, and also wanted to know if anyone is soaking the bands in atf prior to install. Know I read it somewhere at one point. And if anyone has used the trans-x diff additive or if GM additive is only way to go. I know the new bands are not supposed to need the additive but seeing as I had 3 relined I will need the additive for them so I am going to use it
