  • T20 counter rotate?

Hey, I'm curious about this cause I have the capability in the Hagen/rooter transmission

Can a T20 be made to counter rotate and do so on the fly?

the hagen as I know it can do one of three options...

think left turn for all scenario

    drive around coasting left wheels
Brake LH side and drive around like skid steer
Counter rotate and spin on the spot.

So can a T20 be modified for those three methods of turning?

I'm not versed in that transmission

Soon to add on a ... RHB31 Turbo..guess that would make it a
    MUSCA TUR BOTA then eh?

    Drive around coasting left wheels.
T20 already does that... just make the control stick move somewhere in the middle of its travel. Fully one way or the other powers/brakes.

Brake LH side and drive around like skid steer.
T20 already does that... just pull the control stick all the way back to apply braking. (Or both sticks for both side braking)

Counter rotate and spin on the spot.
T20 needs split shift modification: Separate the single shifter (with its two linkage rods) into two separate ones, that allows individual control of each side.

Note: In reverse, the control sticks reverse operation. i.e. pushing forward brakes, pulling back powers.

Does this mean that you have to stop to engage reverse? I can just pull back harder and reverse engages...I'm just wondering how ya'll work those machines.

Those with Hagens have it so easy, push both controls forward go forward, pull back go back one forward one back is steer be it coast...one stick in a neutral point or brake point or reverse engaged. It is interesting to drive and downhill braking is epic in it's fear factor LOL till you get the hang of it.

I'm still adding a disc to each driven jack shaft mind you for safety and park brake..there is only neutral park so you can roll the machine along.

Yes, T-20's must be stopped to shift gears, and the gears are not synchronized.
The Hagen is a much more rare trans that was only put into a few machines. Very little is known about it's design, durability, and longevity. I suspect it is basically a hydrostat, and durability and longevity would be good as long as the fluid is cooled properly. You may not be able to put much horsepower to it or get much speed out of it, but if it works well in your machine.......
The Sierra trail boss, and Mudd-Ox are also capable of instant reverse. Trail bosses had transmission issues (I suspect mostly from abuse), and the Mudd-ox uses industrial grade hydraulic motors.

Thanks for the info on the T20.

The Hagen is actually in constant mesh, there is a fellow who raced AATV's and said he had 80-100 hp 500CC triple feeding it with ZERO issues. He did however machine off the reversing gears so the transmission only had brakes.

It is a counter rotating shaft transmission that uses clutch packs similar to a posi in a truck rear end, engaged by an annular piston that is hydraulically actuated by the controls.

This allows the transmission to feed one side or the other from full lock to partial lock to function, when the clutches are pressed in it forces those gears to actuate.

I read the patent on the transmission to be able to fully understand it. I've removed one annular control piston and side gear to see the clutch packs inside and determine if I can replace them without completely disassembling the unit which I cannot.

What is up is a fellow has an old thundercheif that may come up for sale and I've thought about the T20 but I like what I have and how it functions.

I can see that it would work extremely well in tight situations like around here. Mostly though was curious how ya'll work the machines.

I think in my other Hagen transmission thread there is video of the transmission and even a link to my build thread on oil burners.

          Again thanks for the info
