  • Transmission Under Water for a Day

    Hi,

My Trans was completely under water for a day. Works fine, except.... something new.... the linkage or something now freezes in cold weather and I must wait for it to get hot. This never happened before. Any suggestions?

You could try flushing it several times, but I would tear in apart, clean with parts cleaner, put it back together and reinstall it. You may have water trapped in your shaft bearings.

I agree with the disassembly, once water is mixed with gear lube from rotating it never completely separates out again. it may work fine for awhile but is sure to freeze again at the worst time

Not sure what you have but if its a T20 tear it down. I've had my own under water and changed the fluid several times before I tore it apart and it still had water trapped in the output bearings. It was just a matter of time for them to rust up. Most other transmissions are similar ,the water stays trapped somewhere and eventually damages it. I run a vent hose off the upper plug on the T20 to keep water from entering there but it gets in around the shift levers if left very long. good luck

about only way I can think of to get WATER out without disassembling it, is fill it with METHYL HYDRATE slosh it around really good, manually actuate it bench test in machine if need be...drain then maybe do it again, drain it make sure you fill with oil bench test and then drain and refill with oil and bench test again...and drain and then fill final fill I suppose...that may work..

DOING so at your own risk mind you!

I would tear it down and inspect it. The lining material is the weak link on these things. There is only two types: water soluble and oil soluble. Since transmission fluid is an oil based material, that only leaves water soluble for the material and when you get water in these transmissions it can cause problems.
On the upside, a T20 is not a complex transmission.

over fill it ,run it for a while and let set. the water should go to bottom, but you will have to do it several times.i did mess up this year flushing my dodge truck tranny by flushing with diesel fuel ,the lining came off all the plates.good luck.
