    United States Patent 3,581,600
    Holdeman June 1, 1971

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSMISSION MECHANISM

    Abstract
A transmission having plural output paths including a single input shaft and a pair of planetary gear sets each adapted to drive an output member, means on said output member being shiftable to engage a forwardly or reversely rotating member of said planetary gear sets to provide a reduced speed drive in forward or a reduced speed drive in reverse by means of braking mechanisms for reaction elements of each gear set. The brake mechanism being arranged such that in forward or reverse operation one of the brake mechanisms will be connected to an element connected to the output member such that the particular brake mechanism can be actuated to serve as a vehicle brake for the wheels or track driven by that particular output member.

Market for another manufacturer? I doubt it! Even if the parts could be machined "in house" cheaply, I doubt there would be enough demand to pay for the jigs.

Aftermarket accessories on the other hand........I could see a market for better drums. Perhaps lighter weight aluminum alloy with a steel sleeve? Maybe even a pressure lube kit w/filter and cooler. Cost would be a huge factor though.

when i looked up the years a patent are good for i found that 14, 17, and 20 were the numbers
depending on the year and type of patent. anything after 1995 is 20 yrs

The patent has been expired for many years. I was picking up Maxs at the factory way back in 2004 and Sid himself told me the patent was expired. He said if Argo didn't have so much pride they would just copy it and have a real transmission for their machine... haha. It's a great design but the T-20 needs several improvements and the market is so small that is really has no use outside of the Max. I'm sure Matt will take care of all necessary improvements and the Max will be better than ever.

Sorry Bridget, I wont make you educate me on the difference between a jig and a fixture. I was just referring to an appliance that would hold the part in place and make all the holes and other machining processes be uniform. On the other hand, a cheap copy made over seas wouldn't really need to be made to decent tolerances. If a part broke inside you could just throw the whole thing away.....How cheap do you think they could make them?

VEHICLE BRAKING BY GEARING LOCK UP CLUTCHES

                  Abstract
A drive control system for a vehicle such as an agricultural tractor includes disc braking means for the vehicle's final drive transmission having co-axial input and output shafts drivably connected by epicyclic gearing including a non-rotatable reaction member in which two mutually engagable elements of the braking means are carried by respective members of the epicyclic gearing which are rotatable at different speeds. This enables the output member to be brought to rest without transmitting vibrations to the final drive casing due to neither of the mutually engagable elements of the braking means being connected to the casing. Associated with the braking means is an arrangement for lubricating the brake disc space during non-braking periods.
