  • Max II steering issue

Hello I just got a Max II, and i have had issues with steering. I can turn relatively good towards the right at low and high speeds, however i can only turn towards the left while i am going very slow if i try to turn towards left while traveling fast i can not turn? I am wondering why this is happening and would like some advice?
    Thanks

Follow your linkage from your left lateral back to the transmission to make sure nothing is binding or hitting anything. If that is clear, make sure your lateral itself is not blocked in some way from moving all the way back. Make sure it moves the same as the right side. If that looks fine, you may need to adjust the bands in your transmission. It's not a difficult process and there are several threads on doing that here in the transmission forum if you will use the search.

Edit: After re-reading your post, I think before I tried adjusting the transmission, I would remove the floorboard, jack up the machine on the left side and turn each wheel by hand to make sure that all of the axles are connected and moving properly.

Yes, do exactly what Mike said, but stop driving it immediately if one side isn't working. If the bands in the transmission are bad, that is a cheap fix (only $35 to reline them through Transmission Crafters in Georgia), but if you'll damage a drum or drums if you keep driving it because of metal to metal wear; bare metal bands with no lining on them hitting the spinning drums inside the transmission.....and the drums can get expensive.

Another thing you could check, if the battery is to big, it will not let the transmission work properly. The U channels will not move as far as they should. Might not be the problem but worth checking.

Ok might have to check to see if something is blocking it from steering but i didn't notice anything before i will have to look up how to check bands in transmission

$35.00 to reline bands? Can you have them made .020 bigger so you can turn the drums a bit..my drums aren't great an I was thinking of turning them. The trans adjustment tools are solo easy to make or you could spend $40 from RR to get the

$35 to reline the bands is PER band. $35 X 4=$140 + shipping each way, so realistically the cost is more like $160-175.

Here is an old post on machining the drums http://www.6x6world.com/forums/trans...html#post46427
I will say that I have machined a couple drums a touch more than the .030".....more like .034", and they were fine. I made sure they would work with the bands by fitting everything back together and bench testing how far the plungers pulled out BEFORE sending the bands to be relined. This made sure the bands would work until worn out again.

Yes you can have them made to any specification you desire. And don't deal with Richard's Relics......save the $40 (plus his ridiculously high shipping and "handling" charges" on top of it) and simply make your own T-20 adjustment too. There's a pic of one with the specs in my gallery.....it was directly from a T-20 service manual.
