  • T20 band wear ???

    HI ,
To all I have may have a band wear issue or is this just normal ??
Operation 6 wheel drifts in the tidal mud flats or any mildly aggressive driving in mud etc .How do I know this , after selecting reverse the 6x6 should stay up on the tilt trailer [a type of handbrake ] but after a several outings it slowly rolls back .The 6x6 does use the large shifter springs from a max etc . Therefore the springs need adjustment again . This situation has repeated itself around the last 5 outings
Is this normal or not ??
[the 4 bands are relined after market ][previuos owner supplied installed with receipts ][I have split the transmission and verified this ]
The bands did not come from Recreatives or Transmission crafters ,this concerns me as to the quality/suitability of the linning material ..
My ssf 6x6 has done approx. 50 hrs

The stock max springs on the sticks won't hold a loaded IV or buffalo truck on my tilt trailer once you let go of the sticks. They just crawl backwards. I used to put a bunjie cord on the attex sticks or any that dosent have springs. They park well then.

        hi,
As u all have mentioned u cannot expect the springs to hold the trans bands . The remaining questions,
Are the bands wearing at an increased rate ???
As the bands cannot hold machine on tilt trailer is additional pressure on the controls during normal forwards and reverse operation to prevent slippage ??

I doubt your band material is sub standard or is wearing out quickly. The material that should go on the bands is a RED material that was commonly used for auto transmissions 40 years ago. The new material that now comes on new bands is BLACK and I was told is still from the auto industry. My guess is that your bands are backwards and are "straightening" themselves on the plunger end as you use them. The pin (anchor) end of the band is close to the drum, but the plunger end needs to have some of the curl taken out to match the geometry of how the plunger comes out of the case.
"More" pressure on the sticks wont hurt anything as long as the pressure is not extreme.

If your total stick movement has increased requiring frequent adjustment I would suspect band wear. Usually after about 50 hours the bands are broken in to the drums and don't need very much adjustment unless heavy usage and slipping. The new black band material really grabs on the drums. I've noticed not having to hold the sticks forward as hard in the buffalo truck loaded heavy as with the red bands. If you haven't had to adjust bands often I would run your vehicle.

              HI
There is a great possibility the bands are backwards [I thought u could not do this incorrectly / 2 x left 2x right ] [recreatives do mark the ends of the bands but these markings were missing ] one of the bands did have a very small tweak/twist in the end of the band .
When the t20 was apart I did not pull the bands replaced bearings ,seals, gasket only and changed sprockets .
The biggest laugh was the previous owner tried to reline the 780 drive clutch with sheet metal. LOL Had to check the trans LOL

The ones Iv tried to drive with bands in wrong we're not drivable. Had one with 4 left bands it didn't drive on the right side.

I just pulled a T20 apart this morning and everything looks really good. How can you tell if the bands need replaced? They look good to me but while I have it apart I want to make sure.

                    Hi ,
The band material is .030 thick plus the thickness of the steel band . This info is from Recreative Industries .Others may chime in [this info was from a few years ago [my memory may be incorrect ]

I was told many years ago by Lenny at RI that you measure the band at several places and if the lined material is less than .015"you replace it. also inspect for any loose areas especially at the plunger end. New bands measure .110 total and the newer backing is .074. hope this helps out
