I always thought of having two different sets of sprockets and chains, and quick way to engage one with a keyway.

My only thought is a sun gear/ ring gear. Be able to immobilize the middle gears to change ratios???? It sounds simple but it could be evil to make... Sure would be cool though.

I change the gear ratio on MAX II and buffalo trucks a lot. But it requires cutting a sprocket off the jack shaft and replacing it. I've toyed with the idea of splined jack shaft ( old axles) and one sliding sprocket and chain with masters for both gear ratios. Would be faster than pulling the jack shaft. The big chalange would be clearing the center chain on the short side. Knowing me I would put in low and leave it. I haven't worked on a hustler for a while and the early one I owned drove direct to the center axle if I remember right.

Why not just use the automatic transaxle out of a front wheel drive car and use break steering from the cv joints? This gets multiple gears out of the mix and there are literally millions of these out there. Geo metro with a 3 or 4 speed automatic would be about perfect for anything less than 1500 pounds.

Salvage the shifter out of the car and you are half way there.

From the c.v. joints its just a matter of figuring out how much gear reduction the machine requires, and then mount the sprockets on probably the middle axles for the gear reduction required, and then tie the front and rear axles off the middle powered axle via standard chain drive.

About the only way I see improving is some type of DOG clutch not a centrifugual clutch that you can then select LOW or HI range I've an idea about it but cannot for life of me draw it...double sided dog clutch between the HI/LOW drive gear, just select which one you want, and voila must come to a complete stop to change but no big deal.

                  Thanks for the idea!
