  • Experimental Argo transmission or ??

IMG_0221.jpgIMG_0219.jpgIMG_0222.jpgHi about 10 years ago I purchased a skid steer transmission that the seller claimed was an experimental transmission from Argo he did live about 20 miles from the plant so maybe its possible . It came with two small master cylinders that you would run steel lines to the transmission that would activate some kind of clutch or brake system internally in the transmission. It has a high, low and reverse, it also came with two reduction gear boxes that are chain driven from the output shafts and would drive each set of wheels. It has just been sitting under my work bench for the last 10yrs but now I am thinking of building an aatv with it. So any info or insight into the transmission would be appreciated. Thanks John

That's the Attex GT2 trans built by ODG(Argo). Search for GT2 threads.

They also built a different trans for the Amphicats.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

This is either a GT-1 or GT-2 (single speed or 2 speed) transmission that Argo designed for Attex after they decided to not use the Borg Warner T-20 and many people believe that this was a major contributing factor as to why Attex went under. These transmissions were pretty much junk. Attex had all sorts of problems with them breaking and warranty claims. Pretty much everyone who gets a very late model Attex with this transmission pulls it out immediately and replaces it with the bulletproof Borg Warner T-20. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Thanks for sharing the pictures though.

:Edit: Jim, I see you must have responded as I was typing this........beat me to it, haha.

One of the significant problems with the trans other than its crazy clutch/brake packs is the output rotation is wrong. ATTEX had to install (2) small counter gear boxes to correct the rotation. These small reduction boxes with 2 gears were so under designed the entire drive system was doomed. Maybe ODG had this design intended for their own machines and realized it was so bad it was worth putting ATTEX out of business

Is the whole G2 transmission considered junk or was the main problem the two small reduction gear boxes ?

The gears are reasonably stout but the dry clutch pack release mechanism is a bit complicated and reduces the strength of the output shafts. I don't know of anybody who has operating experience in a running unit. The 2 secondary boxes have soft input shafts and usually found bent. I have photos of the unit apart in the photo gallery Search GT-2. if you want to build a serious 6x6 I stay with an Argo box or T-20

I'm not sure but that trans may have been in the original version of the Centaur, Been 20+ years but there was a mid engine design machine (later became Predator I believe) that had a goofy trans similar to that in it. I don't believe it had the smaller boxes in it. again this is a foggy 20+ year old memory of a visit to the factory, hung over.

I thought Centaurs were Hydro drive???? All Predators were hydro as well.

Centaurs are a hybrid dual dif. gear drive with hydrostat, basically how the Admiral came to be with the 3 difs though different.
Predators are hydro's. The original prototype I am referring to was configured like the Predator and Mudd-Ox , when I was there the factory could not get the vibes out of the diesel and from what I remember that project was shelved a while. I heard one of the engineers took off and made the Triton Predator, maybe not but that's what I heard.

Again this is all 20+ years ago.
