  • Is securing transmission needed

Good morning everyone, My question today is, I plan on installing the spit shift into my MaxIV and am wondering if securing the tranny is also something that should be done also while I an installing the split shift?. I read that the factory attachment holding down the tranny would not be enough to stabilize or hold the tranny when the split shift is installed. Is this true? and a good idea? Any input will be greatly appreciated Thank you all in advance.

In my experience, over time the T-20 can work itself loose from the basic four mounting studs in almost any application. I've had new studs with locktite, lockwashers, nylock nuts, oval-lock nuts and just about everything else on an Attex, Swamp Fox, RIM (Max IV) and a Hustler all come loose at least a little bit to the point that they required tightening. I can't tell you how many T-20s I've pulled apart with utterly destroyed case halves where the transmission has rocked on the studs for years and nobody ever knew. Even without split shifting, anything you can do to lock the T-20 into place is a good idea.

When I built the frame for the Super Swamp Fox, I integrated an upper mount on the T-20 that incorporates the seat mount. She's not going anywhere.

I know this really doesn't apply to your Max IV (I think?), but it's just a general way of addressing a common problem with many AATV models that run this transmission. When I got my 980, the poor previous owner eventually gave up on keeping the lower bolts tight (Hustlers are notoriously bad), and the transmission was held in/down with a ratchet strap.

Wow!!! I did not know that the coming loose of all the mounting bolts were such a serious issue with the T20s, that I will certainly make sure I check them when I pull the back seat in the morning. Thank you so much for that valuable info that I was not aware of about those trannys and have a great night,God bless.

The T20 transmission will try to roll if u only use the 4 mounting studs . The studs work loose in the trans case and wear out the threads etc .
Install additional bracing from top case holes down to the chassis rail at a 45 degree angle is how I fixed the super swamp fox .

This set up works like a charm. Easy to remove when needed with no chance of it moving when its not supposed to.

If your transmission is mounted in slots with studs it would be a real good idea to add extra braces. The factory kit( I don't know the part numbers ) add a lot of strength to the rear frame and only about 1 1/2 pounds. It also restores the dimensions for the mounting to correct specifications. I've installed a lot of the factory design kits that bring the frame up to 2008 specs. If your transmission is mounted through holes with bolts but no solid brackets at the front top, adding the the front brackets really stops the bolts from comming loose.
