I went riding yesterday and boy did I have a blast. I was the only one with a 6x6 so everyone was astonished at the holes I could go through with ease. Pushed and pulled out about every 4x4 and side by side at the ride at least once. Trailered my ride and headed for home. Stopped at the car wash and cleaned it out and off and took it in for the night. This morning went to offload it and the right side wouldn't go in reverse, jiggling sticks, t-20 shuffle but no go. Figured the pin on plunger was bad or broken. Tried to pull it out and, well 4 hours later eureka it's ou but what I found was not pretty. Pin completely gone and the walls scratched to sh@$. And the gear positioning deal inside is broken. Just got this max 4 two weeks ago could this have been prexisting or did it just happen. Was shifting fine before today. And do I need to fix the gear thing or if I just change the plunger will it be ok. No sight of the pin any where

You will need to pull the T20 apart and replace the shift collar. It's really not a big deal and it's more of a pain getting the T20 out of the machine then it is to tear into the transmission itself. As for the damage, my guess is that it was preexisting. To me, it looks like the pin wore down or broke a long time ago and the plunger sank a little into the shift collar but who knows. I would post a wanted ad for the shift collar and plunger here on the site once you get it apart and see if someone has one for sale. You can always order a new one from a Max dealer or direct from the factory but it will be more expensive.

The guy I got it from didn't know much about it. From what he told me the original owner didn't either.its a pretty new machine, 03 I think that's what was written in manual in pen I'm assuming that's when it was originally purchased. It has a tach on it showing 182 hrs. Don't know if it was added when new or later. The guy I got it from said it was there when he baught it and it only showed 120 or so, but who knows. Just wondering has anyone ever converted a max 4 to full hydraulic and done away with the t20 entirely. Been thinking about replacing it with some motors and a pump I have on the shelf in the shop. Originally intended on putting them in my max 2 but the t20 hasn't given me any problems since the rebuild about two years ago.

Yes, the shift collars are the same for each side. It looks like it was a victim of someone who was a very aggressive shifter. that should call him I have been broken for a very long time and you were just lucky being able to shift into forward and reverse.sigpic
