  • Max IV belt installation problem

Very frustrating. I got the old belt off via knife blade. That was easy. ( the belt squealed a lot on two trips riding slow over tundra).
I am having problems getting the new belt on.
First, the clearence between secondary clutch and tub is less than the width of the belt, making the belt differcult sliding down to the secondary clutch. A stick is used to flex the tub to solve this issue. Tough but doable.
Second issue, With the belt over the primary, I can't get the belt to walk over the secondary. I'm thinking to shove a crowbar to open the secondary but fear scratching the clutch faces. How do I do this?
What proceedure do you guys do? Am I the only one that is getting his butt kicked by this?

I'll have to read how to do this. I printed out the manual from this site. Got to study it a bit.
My Max IV had an auxiluary alternator installed, too. It most likely will need to be unbolted somewhere.
Do I loosen the engine or the whole stand?
Perhaps if I remove the primary instead? Pry open the secondary and get the belt on this way?

          1. slide the belt completely over the secondary to the smallest portion (where the spring is),
          2. slide the other end of the belt over and onto the primary.
          3. slowly walk the belt from the smallest portion of the secondary into the grove of the secondary where it is supposed to go. This may take a little time, moving a few centimeters at a time.
          4. and before you know it, viola!!!!! it's on!!

Follow Fred's instructions and work the belt on in the same direction that the engine rotates. you can also put some baby powder on the belt to make it slip between sheaves when you are pulling on it.

Although I did try to walk the belt around the secondary it was very tight. I couldn't get to to go on.
We'll try again today. I think I'll open the secondary a bit help slip the belt in the groove.

The belt has to come on from the transmission side not the tub side with your clutches. I've not found much more clearance gained by loosening the engine frame. Feel free to call me and I'll walk you through it. 907-388-8582. I'm going to make video next time I have an older IV here. I've tried spreading the driven and blocking open with a wedge only to find the clearance to the engine frame is reduced. With practice rolling it on works well.

After a lot of effort and some failures we decided to loosen the motor mount bolts (and one other bolt used to hold an auxiluary alternator) we tilted the engine. I shoved a shovel handle under the engine to hold it there while the wife and I rotated the belt on the secondary. We had to wrap a thin rope around the belt to pull it while being rotated. It worked. The belt is on.
                  Thanks for the advise everyone.
