  • Looking for the Plans of Scrambler steering wheel and transmission setup

    Hi guys

Looking for any plans on how it was done or tech drawing or something like that or anything that might help me
I'm just interested in how the steering wheel skid steering was done as it looks cool and why it was not taken on by any other 6x6 or 8x8 company's and only the Scrambler used it

Can anyone give me any pros or cons about it the scramblers skid steering steering wheel

The slip-clutch type steering was used by many in the early days. The Scrambler and the Terra Tiger were the two big ones I can think of. Why wasn't it more popular? Well....it sucked. Along with no reverse, it was more trouble prone than a T-20 (wet system equivalent). In the case of the T.T. it was very trouble prone.

Yes, it's called the T20. Some systems never work Tom, they just aren't up to it. They work in the factory and on demo but when you get out into real life and dust, dirt and general abuse come into play they just give up the ghost.
You really have three choices, fully hydraulic, T20 or Argo system. If you can't get a T20 on a regular basis then Argo system has to be the best all round way. Lots of gearboxes with a diff in and discs and calipers are available over the counter.

Scrambler had a rack-and-pinion setup behind the steering wheel with a master cylinder on each end that worked slave cylinders on the transmission. Some of them did actually have reverse via a starter motor mounted on the transmission to drive the system backwards. It wasn't great, but better than nothing. The system may have worked for a light machine with minor payload, but the fiberglass Scrambler bodies were pretty hefty and the transmission systems trouble prone. The Got'cha, with four wheels and stick-steer using the same transmission, didn't seem to work too badly. If you look at the race pictures from the 70s and 80s, you'll see most of the Scrambler racers had sticks instead of a steering wheel. I suspect a T20 was hiding in some of them as well.
Stuck in the seventies- not in the swamp.
