  • Clutch/belt

Bought a new belt and when revving in neutral the belt still is about 1 - 1 1/2" from the top of the pulley. My question is the clutch somewhat adjustable ? I see there is a nut on the side. Or is this acceptable ? Just trying to get more speed.

The belt should be at the top of the clutch, can you adjust belt by moving engine? What machine? Norm...

Are you talking about the drive clutch on the engine? What engine and RPM are you turning?

The motor is a 18hp Briggs. I have no idea how many rpm.

The belt is a Gates 6007. It measured 54.5" outside. Do they make a shorter one?

                Drive/Motor pulley

On a 950 with a 18 Briggs what should the distance between the two clutch halves be on the bottom where the belt rest when not running? This one is close to 2 inches. It does close up so its working. Also when NOT running how much play in belt? Putting your finger on it and pushing it up and down.

How do you tell if the motor clutch is bad? We can't go back so we raised the motor 2" the belt when motor is off is tight on the shaft of the pulley. I can push it up and down maybe 1 ". But when looking at the belt there is 3/4" gap between it and the sides of the pulley. could the pulley be opening too far? WE're lost.... This is all with a brand new belt.

                        Pullies

To start top speed is 10-12 mph. The belt had almost 3 " of play and could only get within 2 1/2" from the top of the drive pulley. Bought a new belt. No change anywhere. So we pulled the motor and I made an adjustable plate for the motor. Put it all back together, adjusted motor back until the belt had only 3/4 - 1" of flex. Started it up. The belt still not to the top of drive pulley, about the same as before so, moved the motor back some more, tightened all down and started it again. Same thing. Now we noticed the belt was loose again and when looking at everything we found that the belt was not at the top of the driven pulley. We kept pulling the belt down into the driven pulley ????? It has a red spring in it. What should it have? How hard is it to change? I hate to ask but does the tranny have to come out to do this? Is the clutch bad? WE are too new to all this to know. Please bear with us for all the questions. HELP

The spring type that you have shouldn't be causing any problem. That would change shift points once you get moving so don't worry about that yet. Can you move the sheaves on the driven clutch (on the Transmission) apart by hand with the belt off? Do you have any photos of the clutch or videos of what it's doing when you rev the motor? That may help diagnose the problem a little quicker.

                            Heyyyy?

Somebody open their book as I can't find mine, isn't a 6007 a 7/8 or 1 inch belt that was used on Attex BakerHill's or a Scrambler? If the belt is one inch wide that is the problem. You need a 1-3/16 or 1-1/4 belt depending on width of clutches.

I'm using the 6007 on my Max IV with the relocated motor so it should be the 1-3/16" wide belt.
