Hi guys. I am in the process of upgrading the primary clutch spring. I have removed the snap ring from the back of the primary clutch. The halves won't come apart. What am I missing here?

Sometimes they need a little taping to get them off but be Careful! there is some pressure on that ramp cup and it can pop off and wrap ya in the skull.
Penetrating oil and twist the halves back and forth. Going together, I use a piece of all thread rod and some washers/spacers to get them pushed back together and held in place while I install the snap ring.
Thanls guys. Nubs, you are right, i meant the driven clutch. I went to home depot and bought a threaddd rod. I am going to bend some iron to fit around the clutch head. I feel like i have a timebomb sitting on my work bench because the ting is just sitting there being held together by rust.

I like to take a center punch and put witness marks on the clutch and ramp cup before poppin' it off, just so it goes back together in the same location

Very good advice....I've seen situations where not doing this creates HOURS of excess work....

I believe you also need to preload the spring with 1.5 turns. I'm not sure of the exact spec. If you don't put a twist in it while it's going to gether, it won't work correctly.
Typically you set the key in place held with the threaded rod just to where the movable face will rotate over the bumps of the helix. Then turn past 2 bumps and pull together and install the snapring. After it's been released set the snapring by raping the center hub with a plastic hammer. This just makes sure the clutch is set tight to the snapring.
OK. Now I am frustrated. I made a spring compressor and with my impact gun, got the helix to go down another quarter of an inch. It is now stuck there. I have whacked it, heated it and compressed it with no luck. Any issues with using a 3 jaw puller on the helix? Thanks.
