  • 97 Bigfoot Clutching issues? Bogs down when climbing or mudbogging.

    Hello fellow Argo maniacs,

Sorry for yet a another clutching question but I can't seem to get this unit working properly.

Its a 97 Bigfoot with a slightly modified 18HP Vangaurd engine: Governor removed,Thinner head gaskets, high rev kit, advanced timing key, modified exhaust and 2-barrel carb with high rise intake. & newer style plastic vacuum fuel pump .It runs excellent compared to stock, very good acceleration from a stop, and has a top speed on the flats of over 30mph.

The problem arises when I am climbing hills or mud bogging. It wants to bog down. But as soon as I stop, It has all kinds of get up and go until I start getting into the higher RPMS again. On the flats its fine.

Its like being in a car with an automatic transmission that will start in 1st gear and shift up into overdrive as you get going but won't shift down until you come to a complete stop.

I've taken the advice of guys like Rockdoctor, like putting the primary spring in hole 1 or two, lubricating the sliders (Followed manual service instructions) ect. Seems to have helped somewhat, but its still not "backshifting" like I need. I don't want extra RPM or a higher engagement off the line it's got plently of acceleration off the line so I haven't monkied with the primary. The belt is new from Argo.

I would expect it to operate somewhat like a snowmobile......steadier rpms when hill climbing or deep powder , vehicle speed slows but RPMs remain relatively steady.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Thank-you

Do you think the clutch is sticking? Have you removed your firewall and watched them while you are trying to climb a hill? Is your belt tight enough?

Sounds as if you have similar problem to mine and a friends, pretty plainly it's gearing. Though they do not race up hill or throw roost in the mud hole they will go where pointed.
The transmissions in the pre 2003? Bifgoot and Vanguard 2 were all H or high speed transmissions, so though it goes like $%&^ it does not have top end climbing power. If you have a set of 22's laying about, bolt them on and see how much it helps. The best alternative is changing the transmission gearing to the G gear set.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
      Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.
