Last month I bought a 1980 maxll. The owner has installed a new 16hp Briggs. I think the belt was from the old motor. I can grab the belt between the clutches and it almost touches in the middle. Also as far as width, the belt sits inside the T-20 clutch. I know that is not right. My question is how much deflection should I have? I have read about this before. Not sure of the forum I read it in. Thanks in advance for any and all response!

A belt of correct width sits flush with outside of driven clutch. Yours sounds narrow to me. The manual for the clutches wants the belt pinched around the center of the drive clutch and pulled tight away from driven. Doing this you want 1/16" clear between belt and center of drive clutch. I've found that when this play is as much as 1/4"'the belt is wrong or badly worn out. Proper belt for that vehicle if the engine is sitting in the proper place is 44 21/32" long x 1 3/16 wide. I use a daco 1039m3 on my II.
