Just wondering. All winter I didn't notice how whiney my trans is but it caught my attention today. Fluid is clean and full but it sounds like an old VW bug going 30 mph in reverse. The sound of my trans is the same in reverse, low, and high. Is this normal for these little tranny's? Are they running spur gears throughout the unit?

Too much transmission noise?

Pre avenger Argos are all straight cut gears and prone to being noisy. Some a lot worse than others. Remove the belt and check for any play in the input shaft. In and out , up n down shouldn't be enough to readily feel. If there is play the far bearing is going most likely. I like the reference to the VW bug. I haven't driven one since I was an apprentice and always thought they were noisy.

Conquest's with G transmissions are very whiney, another cause ,which is a deeper whine, could be the clutch bushing. While the belt is off put a hand at both sides of the driven, turn sliding pulley slightly off cam and wiggle, if it's a lot replace it.sigpic
My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
Joe Camel never does that.
