  • another t20 band question..

This is eating my lunch...I can't figure out what the heck I'm doing.
I've read all the stuff and I've looked at all the pics and I still can't get it straight.

Took tranny out to check bands and stuff.
Well I got it all put back together today and now I'm trying to adjust it out.

Does the u channel sit flush/tight to the case?

If I get it leveled off, and do the whole prying from one end to the other I'm not seeing a whole lot of movement in the plungers...

Should I just order those dang tools?

    Someone make a video!!!

I'm just about useless at posting pics and video but I'll attempt to talk you through it. Call me if you can or text me after 11am your time. If you have access to a dial indicator that's how I now set them when out of the vehicle. You can make your own tools with anything .187" (3/16)" that will fit under the head of the adjusting bolts. I made my first ones out of 1/8" welding rod and just used them to set the u-chanels parallel to front of case. Set up dial indicator over one bolt, dosent mater which one. Turn both bolts the same number of flats on the head till you get .300 travel pushing in on the bolt then prying out on it. One flat on both bolts changes travel about .020". Thanks Mark..

I'm going to give it another shot this morning...I've been approaching this as an exact science.

I needed to back off and take a fresh look at it.

I'm going to get it to where I think it needs to be on the bench and put it back in the machine and then I can fine tune.

If I start pulling my hair out I will give you a holler.

It's 8 and already 80° here......should be a hot one in the garage this morning.

Getting the socket on the bolt while pushing the tab and u-channel down can be difficult at times. To make things easier, a member once posted that he slotted the bolts to adjust with a screw driver rather than a socket. I adjust mine by feel to some extent. I couldn't begin to explain my process.

I find it's much easier to measure the distance between the case and the U channel than to use the adjustment tool. If you use a wooden block cut to 11/16" it works well. Measure just below the top and above the bottom plungers, right next to the bore. This will get you a little tighter than the adjustment with the tool, but still enough free travel so the bands don't drag.

So an 11 / 16 block @ the plunger or at the center of the case. I got it all put back together today and it's running fine, just have to pull back a bit to get reverse.
I think everything is going well but I have nothing to compare it to because this is my first 6x6.
