    Hey guys.

    I am having some trouble with belt tension and need some help.

    when the engine is idling the driven clutch (secondary clutch) spins. This makes shifting impossible and grinding occurs...

    My thoughts are that the belt tension that is wrong. The belt is pretty loose when the engine is off. you can almost touch the two sides together...

    Also i think the pulley centerlines are not in line the motor is off to one side. Could this be a factor. Is there a good way to accurately check this?

    Anyone in the charlotte area that could lend a hand?

    What ATV is this on? Some are notorious for grinding gears. I don't think the belt tension is causing the issue since it sounds like it may actually be a little loose. The centerline of the CVTs should really have some offset to them. Depending on the model, anywhere from 3/16" to 5/16". Here is a photo:



    It sounds like the issue could be an engine that is idling too high? Rev the motor up a little and let off the throttle. As the engine revs dip below idle, try to shift then and see if it is any better.

      I agree with mike about the engine RPM, I have a tiny tach on mine and at 1200 RPM my secondary turns but shifts very smooth, at around 1600 and above it wants to start grinding.

        Hey mike. It's a surtrek. Has a honda 4 stroke in it. I will try to mess with the idle some this week

          When I lined up my clutches with the diesel, I got one of those aluminum yardsticks and laid it from primary to secondary. The ruler I have is the same width as the narrower part of the belt profile. This sits in the secondary where the belt would be at idle. the other end sits against the stationary sheave of the primary. You don't want it exactly lined up, the primary should be a little bit to the left. Will add a picture after. I had to use this method because using the offset method that Mike showed wouldn't work for me. They're not a matched set.

            what primary clutch do you have? there may be some adjustment of engaugement rpm with weights and springs....
