  • Older Argo primary clutch problems.

I have an early 90s Argo with the 17hp Kohler engine. Just purchased it and the only problem I have found so far is that when it warms up the clutches stick and won't move to change the belt to a higher ratio. After spending most of the night reading posts I have come to the conclusion that it is most likely the primary clutch. Just looking to see if some of the veterans would conclude the same thing?

Could be either clutch. Remove the belt and slowly raise speed to see if primary will close. It may stay open so with engine off pry movable side back. Keep your fingers out of it! If that closes at throttle it's probably ok. Next grab the driven pulley halves and try to rotate opposite directions. You should be able to rotate them with spring pressure. The driven should be lubricated inside the spring area. If all this dosent find a problem shoot a short video and post here so more eyes can help. Good luck

The driven side is well lubricated and is movable just by grabbing the belt and wedging it deeper into the pulleys. I'll have to warm it up to shoot the video, it works fine when I first start running it, picks up speed till it tops out and with the cover off I can see the belt bottoming out on the driven pulley. After it warms though there is no movement from the drive pulley at all, give it gas and it stays at the same speed no matter whether it's idled or wide open. I will shoot a video when I get back home though and see if it'll help. I'm just trying to figure it out so that when I take it to a dealer to fix I'm not paying the $100 an hour to diagnose, just to repair/replace.

Does sound like engine clutch is sticky. That clutch is threaded on the crankshaft. Not that hard to remove. I pull a spark plug and feed a few feet of rope into the cylinder then rotate the engine to lock up. Use big wrench on end of clutch to break loose and spin off. Clutch can be disassembled ,cleaned and lubed. Probably just rust or sticky on the shaft part just under the belt.
