  • Hustler Transmission Problem (Apex Gearbox)

    Hello All,

I purchased a Hustler a few months back not running. I Finally got to the point of testing after a few fiberglass repairs and adding a starter system. Everything went fine until I tried shifting to forward and driving. I had a horrible grinding sound which sounded a like the transmission was popping out of gear. The transmission is an Apex, reverse seemed to work just fine. I checked the linkage connection and everything seemed to be good an tight. Any suggestions would be helpful.

This is the Apex with just forward and reverse, right? Not forward high range, forward low range, and reverse? Beautiful 1st gen Hustler you have there. Pre-T-20 with the Apex/jackshaft clutchpack transmission setup and a Kohler 309cc single 2 stroke. Do you have the jet pump on it too?

I can't help you too much with the Apex since I don't have that much experience with it, but this is a common gearbox. It was used in other AATVs such as early model Sidewinders, Coots, and Alsport Trackers, just to name a few. I know Amphiman1 has a few parts units floating around in his collection too. Maybe he could help point you in the right direction.

Yes, forward and reverse only. You are also spot on with the motor. I don't have the jet drive, though i would love to have one! I was originally going to upgrade to a 440 but I somehow fell in love with the Kohler 309. I'm hoping someone out there has a spare Apex gearbox they would like to sell. Thanks for replying! If anyone out there has a suggestion or a spare Apex gearbox let me know.
