  • Newbie Question RE Belt Deflection

Hi everyone I am a new hustler 950 owner and had a question I could not seem to find a answer to using the search function. Currently the deflection of the main belt going from the clutch to the t20 is so much I can pretty much wrap my hand around the belt, this does not seem right to me. The machine is pretty slow right now and I thought it was due to the 14hp briggs that is in it but now I think it may be a combination of things. So I am trying to find what the proper belt deflection.

Also while I have your ear does anyone know if a 18hp van carb will fit on a 14hp van? I have a 18 sitting in my garage that I am going to hop up a little bit before I put it in but would like a little better performance in the mean time.

Thank you and have a great new year!

Check out this post regarding belt deflection: https://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-...tml#post148621

It sounds like your belt is too loose. Your Hustler most likely doesn't have a way to adjust the belt tension. Some members have machined slots into their motor mounts to allow them to adjust the belt tension. Otherwise, you just have to replace the belt.

Thank you, I'll measure my current belt and get one a bit shorter. Also I'll double check the belt width. When I swap motors I'll make a adjustable mount.

The adjustable mount will make a big difference. I wouldn't necessarily buy a shorter belt. The one you have is probably the correct size but is probably just stretched from use. A new one with the same dimensions should work or, if you wait until you make the adjustable mount, you can probably get more use from your current belt by just being able to tighten it up.

Finally got around to measuring the belt, 50 1/8" long. That seems pretty long and even if I was able to adjust the motor I feel that I still would not have proper belt deflection. I am total new to 6x6's as well as small engines so I could be absolutely wrong. At idle the belt does not move. I will still make a adjustable motor mount here pretty soon.

Do you know the part number for the belt you are running? According to this post http://www.6x6world.com/forums/hustl...html#post96498, the Dayco belt that works is HP2031. Here is one on ebay and it states that the belt is 49.095" long: John Deere Gator HPX Trail Gator 2x4 4x4 Dayco Drive Belt HP2031 VG10928 | eBay

The only thing I can make out on the bet is the numbers 271. The belt is in pretty ruff shape. I will pick up the belt you listed. Thanks Mike, your the man!

Ok got the new belt on and I can still wrap my hand around the belt. For now I shined the engine up to put tension on the belt and gave it a test drive. Much faster top end but low end seems less than it was with the old belt and tons of slack? I will be making a adjustable mount next week. Why would I loose low end with a tighter belt? Also we I say tighter there is still plenty of deflection. I'm new to small engines and clutches, I work on cnc machines.

                Thanks

Another thing I just noticed is the clutch on the t20(secondary?) has play on the shaft, I am assuming that's an issue?

The deflection is not awful, the belt is too narrow, the movement of shaft is normal.

Thanks Jim. I just got back from a spin and noticed that tranny fluid is leaking from the shaft... As for the belt It is 1 3/16" thick, should I go up to a 1/4 or more? Another thing is when I get done riding the secondary clutch does not open all the way, when I push the belt down it spreads apart the rest of the way. Is this normal?

Sounds like it is running 2200-2500 rpm, there is a lot of the speed problem, large gears may also be speed reducer.

It has a gas pedal instead of a hand throttle, I wonder if it is limiting the throttle...
