  • how is the key secured in the driven clutch?

So I'm driving over the weekend and I look under the hood on my 1980? Tecumseh powered Argo 6x6 and the key is hanging out of the keyway on the transmission side of the drive pully (driven clutch?) shouldn't there be something like a bolt and washer covering the keyway so the key can't vibrate out? I've never messed with the transmission and don't know if this foretells a greater problem?

All I did is tap the key back in.

The clutch has a retaining bolt with washer. 3/8" X 16 thread for the bolt. Length depends on type of clutch.

Its pretty natural that the key will back out of the keyway a bit. The retaining bolt and nut will hold all together.

If you look at the keyway its a bit tapered and once the key is tapped in and seated, they are pretty much set. If anything, its difficult to remove the clutch due to the fact that the key will lock itself in the keyway. I've had to stick the entire unit in the deep freeze over night and then use a heat gun on the shaft to get the clutch removed from the shaft.
