  • Has Anyone????

Has anyone ever had their belt flip over on them???? I just got the sears sportster going and I really have a delay when getting up to speed and if I hold it throttle open and it gets to top speed the belt will flip over after I hear a little belt squeeling. It isnt too loose im just wondering if it is too tight, anyone know what the problem is????

I haven't had a belt flip over....but it sounds like your belt may be too loose, generally that is what squealing indicates...you should have around 1" of deflection of the belt.

Check your belt deflection and let the brain trust know...I'm kinda interested, as my belt is tight but it still squeals sometimes.
    Hammers should have warning labels.

I've had a very worn belt do that to me before. Is your belt new or old and is it the "correct" belt for your clutches?

There are different clutch sheave profiles. The belt has to match the profiles of the clutch sheaves.

What belt width are you using? Can you post dome pictures of the installation?

        Belt Type

I got a brand new gates multi speed belt with 30 deg total pitch (15 each side) symetrical belt that is 1 3/16" wide. I have the old driven on the T-20 that is a salsbury 780 and a new comet duster 94 c drive clutch. It only flips when I take the machine wide open, and I really have alot of delay getting up to speed. I replace the spring in the driven with a new green spring and new shoe ramps and it shifts fine when I rev the motor up in nuetral but under a load of driving it will not engage all the way. Anyone got ant insight?? I will be able to post up pictures later.
        Thanks

Did you preload the green spring when you installed it. It should be turned "2 bumps" when installing it. It takes some pressure to twist the spring when putting it together.

How tight is the belt? When in doubt, tighten it up. On a T-20, the most that will happen is the machine will creep when in gear.

              Preload

Yep I turned it 1/3 rotation to load it, I might have to go with a shorter belt and re adjust everything
