T20 disassemble

Okay so I took the tranny out to disassemble and inspect. Seems it was put together with some sort of gray gasket maker. I used a hook razor blade to scrape out what I could between halves. Still doesn't want to split apart. I'm afraid to pry too much on the aluminum. Any suggestions ? Thanks. Dave S.

I hate t20s with gasket sealer. I charge an hour extra labor on one if it has locktite gasket maker in it. Try two pry bars or flat screw drivers with something between them so you can pry on the case halves. Just put pressure on it and wait a bit. This usually breaks them apart. If the clutch is removed drop input shaft onto a block of wood from about 6 ". When it goes back together retain the gaskets with grease.

The T20 should split apart without having to pry but it sounds like you are victim of the gasket maker. The center plate stays attached to one size of the T20 but if the gasket maker sealed it to the other side. First make sure you have the diamond shifters and all of the bolts/nuts out. Then, use a punch against the center plate through one of the bolt holes and tap it apart. Do this and work your way around the T20 and it may help.

Okay I was able to disassemble the tranny. I ended up putting a pipe in opposite plunger holes. Then I took a scissors jack and placed it between the pipes. A few turns later and it came apart. Sad news is it appears the bands were replaced as stated but they didn't repair the drum so it has already wore through the band on the output side. So if anyone in the Ohio area has a good t20 I believe I'm in the market.

Great idea to split a glued together case. Every part is replaceable or repairable. Post some pics of the drums. They may be repairable or find good used. New ring gear drums are spendy. I've talked to transmission crafters and they have installed heavy lining for someone that had to turn the drums a lot to get clean.
