  • What did I do wrong? Sprocket shaft sticking out

    Hello everybody,
    possibly a newbie error, but to me it looks like the sprocket on the input shaft side is sticking out too far. It is almost a 1/4 inch further out than the other side, and the chain does not line up. Is there an obvious thing I overlooked when reassembling the T20?parallel.jpg

    Looks by the pic that the sprocket had worked it's way off the shaft ( they were originally pressed on) and someone welded it roughly in place

      Looks to me like the tranny is not in Square ?
      If you look at the axle sprocket it is in line with the case Not the drive sprocket ?
      Check you trans mount !

        I'm going with Race on this one, it is almost impossible to get the trans installed crooked in an Attex unless the frame is bent or has been poorly modified for some reason.

          I STAND CORECTED on this one. I didn't really take notice to the tranny drive being Welded on.

            Thanks for the suggestions, that makes me think at least I didn't assemble it the wrong way ;-)

            I guess that leaves me trying to run the chain a bit "sideways" until I find a better shaft/sprocket combination,

                brxl, a possible easy solution may be to buy a 2 piece split sprocket to go on the shaft next to the one out of line. you may have enough room for it to fit and line up and still have the chain clear the old sprocket. tsubaki co. makes them for different size chains and teeth no.s hope this helps, johnboy va.

                  It is obvious from the photo that someone who had no mechanical skill instead of fixing thinks correctly, just welded things ( horrible welds) together and made a mess. Your only correct solution is to take this mess apart and replace the junk and rebuild it correctly. otherwise you will have nothing but trouble. Do it right!!!!! I have seen street rods built like this and they are problematic.

                    My question is why not simply remove the shaft with that bubblegum weld, grind it free and then reweld so the sproket is properly lined up? Or chuck it in a lathe and mill off that horrible weldment?

                      Your least risky option here would be to grind the inner sprocket off and move it out on the axle to line up with the tranny sprocket, if you think that tranny sprocket weld job will hold up. It would take some skill to repair the out putshaft to get the sprocket in the right position. Downside is the axle sprocket would have to moved back if you change transmission or repair it with a new output shaft, which is the best but costly option.

                        better.jpgbetter.jpgThanks a lot to all for the input. Sort of took it to my heart and took the entire thing apart again. I now understand why the RTV seal is a pain to remove and the C-Ring from hell took the combined effort of 3 screwdrivers to pry out...but it is now replaced with a good used one, hopefully now good for a long time.
