LOL Wedge that's OK pal I have lots of pics of things in my life that has went wrong glad to be alive and still wrecking things,got to believe it was a bearing failure but once the transplant is done I will disect the old one before it hits the bin and yes there was a piece of the outer race in her belly so we will see but then again could have been a snaposes of a tooth or two getting jammed up and putting pressure on the bearing, dunno the only thing that's sure is shes terminal i was in forward low range when all Heck broke out but that said its up high why is all the tranny fluid in the belly did it punch a hole and I kept driving time will tell.Man Down NCT P.S wife wants you all to know that pictures of her do not count in the previous statement.LOL

You will find out when it's apart for sure. Also tell her it's all good as long as She didn't do it.
If you want to let it go let me know as I would like to go over one of those for a rebuild .

As dirty as the trans is I'd assume she's been leaking awhile. I assume turning has been increasingly difficult.

Well Jim you must know that there is a pile of hours on this machine and i lube the heck out of the chains its a pretty greasy mess under the floorboards and behind the firewall,every couple years or so I prop it up degrease it and dry it down the mess all over the trans is a combination of slung up lube from the primary chains as well as some venting from a trans that runs hot at times,to be clear trans fluid is changed yearly(sometimes sooner) as well as checked weekly,maintenance is on a schedule and adhered to never has it ran low on any fluid keep in mind this trans is on the doorstep of 5000 hrs to me that's respectable givin the fact that it snow plows for hours on end.Shes not a showpiece its a work horse its been a super dependable unit that has carried us in to the outback and home faithfully should I buy a new or newer unit probably but I like this old pile and Iam so familiar with it that replacing it seems sacrilegious,everything I need to make this rig close to new is here the only thing that Iam currently missing is time to many things on the go I believe you know what that is all about in spades,I will start this with a change out of the trans and would do engine as well as new axles/chains etc but I need the damn thing to much at this time of year to break it down that far when I get the chance I will do a teardown of the old trans and shoot pics and we can exchange notes as to what came first the chicken or the egg.Cheers NCT

Catastrophic bearing failure on the cluster shaft that blew the case boss out and the rest is history as the misaligned shaft removed a bunch of teeth from various gears and dropped into the planetary and destroyed it nothing to save got chucked as the wife had enough of the gear oil smell in the shop,surprisingly what was left of the gears looked not so bad for the hours on them.But in the end Iam glad it went south as the new 3.3 is the best thing that has ever happened to that machine anyone that is going to use there machine for work and tracked its the only way to go with a std trans,it has transformed this Avenger to a very easy to handle with load unit literally plays with them big rubber tracks.NCT

Ok, good to know, I actually thought some of the planetaries may have broken ( a new noise and increased difficulty in turning would be noticed increasing as each one broke and bound) taking out the rest and a chunk in between the gear plate and pinion gear breaking the housing.

Often when the trans are opened 1-4 planetaries are broken and the cage has come loose.

Were the bushings in the cage any good or wore sloppy?

Bushings pretty sloppy,the cluster shaft went out of place first Jim bustin up the gears which fell into the planetary drive when all heck broke loose the bearing and outer case boss broke reverse was gonzo low range still workin ish I drove it at least 600 yards to a trailer but steering was nothing but bump steer the planetary was locked up it was touch and go but I made it.NCT
