  • Clutch help ASAP

2000 max4 had 18 hp vanguard just changed to a 23hp vanguard, Total t20 trans rebuild, red spring, and chains. Here's the problem the mechanic just called and said he broke the clutch. I'm guessing that it's a comet clutch but I don't know so here I am again asking for help. Since I'm ordering a new one TOMMOROW please tell me what I have and which is the best to buy, and should I go to Richard or is there some special clutch place that you would recommend. I don't mind buying a bigger better clutch than the one I had, I just don't know what's bigger/ better. Or do I use the same one. My use is strictly low speed and torque not racing. Thanks again. How about part number 302405A-W2 from MFG supply. 780 series drive clutch.

Which one broke? Drive clutch on the engine, or driven clutch on the transmission?

Drive clutch just to verify it's not the one with the red spring it's the bigger round one. I guess you can tell by that statement that I'm learning.

Go to mfgsupply website. You can drill down to max clutches, and they have 2 choices for drive clutches. One is the 780 for 1 inch bore and the other is for a 1 1/8 bore. You likely need the 780 but have your mechanic pull the broken clutch and check.

How do you break a clutch?

Dirtdobbler I can't thank you enough for the quick response I edited the post and put the part number in there I think it's correct. It wasn't broke until he tried putting everything back together so I honestly don't know how. But last week I was reading a post where someone broke a belt and there's was wedged open, and everyone said spray it down with lube and tap it but keep your fingers out of the way. So I think he tried that and cracked the housing but I'm not shure yet. I just know last week I read about it and then it happened to me now I wish someone would write about a winning lottery ticket so I can wait a week and have that happen to me (lol). I need it after all the stuff I've done to the machine. All this because one band broke in the trans. I figured I have it apart might as well put new stuff in it. The motor took 10-15 min to warm up after that it ran great but I didn't like waiting and floating the choke so here we are. The machine was supposed to be on a job last week and we broke it 3 days before Christmas. Hopefully this is it.

That drive clutch will work fine, most people are replacing wore clutches with it, provided you used the 18hp clutch during the transplant.

Richard probably sells the same clutch, money???

Yes you'll be fine. There really aren't many other simple direct bolt and go options for you.
