  • Bigfoot clutches and similar types :THE REAL FIX!

    Hello,
Its no secret that older argos are under powered and if you have done any mods to the engine...heres how to take full advantage...you must modify the clutches, this cures those of us with "HU" geared transmissions big time as well, no need to do a gear swap when the clutches are set up.

    1. Remove clutches
    2. Dissasemble primary as per manual and take note of the number stamped in the weights. ..if it says 225g then take out the weights and using a digital scale grind down the narrow ends until they weigh exactly 200g each( this is the same weight that is in the lesser powered 16hp vangaurd)
3.Place weights back in blocks, use steel wool to shine up where the blocks slide on metal, clean everything with brake cleaner
    4. Using dry graphite SPRAY, lubricate the blocks and where they sit and slide; on the top piece too.
5.Carefully apply some graphite spray to the brass bushings only.Do not get any on the clutch faces( if you do wipe it off with brake cleaner and clean rag
    6. Reassemble clutch ( do not use any spacer mod on the primary spring( welding rod you don't need it)
    7. Clean drive belt with hot water &dawn detergent and use a scotch brite pad on edges of belt, dry completely.
This will dramatically improve power and backshifting as is, top end will not be affected it will just take longer to get there but mid range and bottom end is a big gain.

A step further for even greater response is to:
    1. Purchase Red secondary spring #5051-1110(heavier from an Avenger), you must cut the new spring so its the approx. the same length as your old lighter spring, make sure you cut it so you can bend a new tab in the same orientation as the old spring(Heat the end cherry red and bend new tab with pliers, cut and finish with zip disk), it should look like your old spring,it will be a bit longer.
    2. Remove and disassemble secondary(driven) clutch as per manual. Clean everything with brake cleaner(check brass bushing for wear and replace if necessary)
3.Once dry and clean lubricate shoes and helix with DRY
graphite spray, also spray brass bushing and where the clutch slides in the bushing, again do not get any on the clutch face
    4. Reassemble clutch as per manual starting with new red spring in hole#2
Take it for a spin.....it will make a HUGE power difference.
You can adjust the position of the secondary spring for more or less bottom end ( #1 being the most bottom end and quicker backshifting)
Top end will still happen because clutches will still reach full shift out eventually.(stock engine maybe not, but still alot more bottom and midrange and you wont be bogging down)
(do not use WD-40 or anything else)
Have fun with the throw your head back acceleration
