  • Maybe a dumb question?

I am rebuilding a hustler 980. I overhauled the t-20. I put the diamonds in forward and the bands engage when I pull the laterals. It brakes when I push forward??? what did I do wrong??

Are the laterals connected to the U channels/popsicle sticks at the right place? Should connect at the bottom of them, and see-saw the U channel with the fulcrum in the middle. Also check where on the sticks the laterals are connected, if they're on the opposite side of the fulcrum than where they should be, you'll change the direction the sticks need to be pulled. I have yet to pull a t20 apart, so I won't be any help past here

Yep connected correctly. Just 180 out. reverse I push and it engages. Probably have the bands in wrong. Just can't see how.

Flyer, this may be a dumb question for you but are you sure it's not working right? Do you have the engine in and connected yet or are you just trying to bench test it?

Sounds like the Diamonds may be in the wrong sides?

Diamonds are in the correct place. Engine is not in yet. T20 is in and axles and chains and laterals. It is just 180 out. pull back for forward. push for reverse. Going to pull the t20 and check the bands.

Flyer give us some pics of your setup.

I asked how you were testing it because trying to test it by hand can be very difficult given the ultimate ratio between the axles all the way back to the input shaft. Just the tightness of a new build can be tough to spin if you are spinning it from the axles.

On another note, do you have the pins in place at the U channel adjuster bolts, so that the plungers are pushed back into "neutral" position as you move the laterals?

I've only built one of these transmissions, but I don't think you can put it together in a way that makes it go backwards.

I cracked it open again. Just to verify left twist bands go to the clutch side and right twist to the other side ? Top plunger controls the forward drum and bottom the rearward drum. So which drum does what?

Take a look at this video. This guy does a good job explaining the band positions.

There is another video on this site, under home page -> literature -> transmissions

Watched a bunch of videos. Found the problem, Left bands in the right side and wrong side bands on the other side. Glad I did not try to run it as was. Thanks for the input. Just a PITA to re-do work already done.

I'm glad you found the problem. I really didn't know it was possible to get it all back together the wrong way.

Well, I didn't either. Now if you take engine rotation into account, it gets simple. I am not the smartest around, doh.
