  • Max secondary cam slider buttons breaking off

Hello. Our Max IV secondary clutch is missing two cam slider buttons. It lost one the end of last season, too (we stored the Max all winter and discovered one button missing this spring).
The original clutch it had also lost a button a few times over the past 4 years.
Are these factory clutches known to do this regularly? Such a pain to replace these things, but got to do it. Thank you

I've had that happen too. It's not uncommon. And yes it's a pain. Some say with engine out you can open the clutch by twisting it open then block it open and change them. I didn't have any luck especially with the red spring with an extra wrap on it. Used a strap wrench and worked it open.

What it lacks in ground clearance it makes up for with traction.

I find it easier to remove the clutch and work on it. I only have two large c-clamps to hold it open once twisted. These clamps won't fit while the trans is in the Max, I'd think.
Is there stronger slider buttons than the factory ones sold by MFG Supply?

The bushing in movable face may be getting worn and letting it rock on the slides. I always replace 3 at a time to make them stay straight.

We got the secondary off the trans, and had to take it apart to clean out the slider button holes.
I inserted three new sliders on it. Now I am going to reassemble the clutch, but I have one question.
Do I wind the cams a bit to tighten the spring a bit (spring tension, pre-load) Or do I just compress the cams
            straight down in the keyway?
            Thank you

Usually rotate it 1/3 to engage the next ramp, mark the spring hook position before you take it apart. You may have to play with the spring hook position if you change from the green to red spring.

The spring end hooks left a mark in their original positions, so I put them back the same place. I will indeed comptess it back, then turn one-third to the next cam. Easy enough now. Thank you very much.

I put the secondary back together. Ready to put the T20 and engine back in the M-IV. An all day project but its enjoyable.
Sometimes I think I should have been trained as a mechanic, its enjoyable. I took a small engine class in high school. Just three of us got an A in that class.
I just didn't like dirty hands back then. Still don't. But it's enjoyable.
Thank you all for coaching me. I certainly do appreciate it.
