  • Help - Hustler T20 trans problem

Ok, guys, first post...First of all, great site, tons of info, Thank you. Now, The Question...I have a Hustler 950 18 hp Briggs T-20 Trans, Everything works except one (push rod?) on the trans. I've looked over the rebuild tutorial here and I can't figure it out. the pushrod comes all the way out and won't operate.
(I think something on the inside has come loose or broken) Does this mean a complete overhaul or is it a quick fix? Oh, this beast is for sale as well, love to keep it, but the wife says the bills come first. Thanks in advance for any info.

From the way you describe this, it seems like it may just be the tiny shift pin that is on the inside of the diamond shaped shifter. You can just get a new one from Recreatives Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 It just pulls right out and the new pin slides right in.......easy fix, if that is the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply...I'm located in North Mississippi, but since this post was moved I'll post the price in the for sale section lol anyway, sixbysix, are you talking about a pin inside the trans? And the only reason i called it a beast is because I've never driven one of these things till I got this one and, well, YeeeeHahhhhh!!!! never would've thought it would be so much fun!

I realized, I meat to call it a plunger on the trans. there's four of them that the linkage attaches to for forward and reverse. anyway, one of the plungers comes all the way out. maybe that'll make it a little clearer

If the plunger comes all the way out then it is not a shift pin. You might have a broken band or broken the attachment of the plunger and the band??

Sorry I was't very clear at first, I think boncrchr might be onto something. Do you think the trans will need a complete rebuild or can I maybe just go in and fix the plunger? Everything else on the trans seems to be working fine

The T20 will have to come apart to see what 's up with the band/plunger. As long as it's going to be down anyway, you may as well clean and check the rest of it. You might be able to replace just the band that's broken, but I'd do the whole set unless they look almost new.

You won't know what it needs until you get it apart. There is an excellent article on this site that goes over T-20 rebuilds. You don't have to replace everything, just what is bad. All that you will for sure need is a re-seal kit from Recreatives, they are about 40 bucks. Other than that just wait and see what you find and report back.

I have broken a shift pin before, basically you will see the shifter diamond moving back and forth, but it does not change gear on that side, however; you can remove the diamond and shift with a screwdriver.

But if your plunger is pulling all the way out, then that is something else. BTW, I am just a junior apprentice on the T-20, if it is not the shift pin, just take pics when you get it apart and the resident experts will be able to help you out.
