  • T-20 rebuild prices???

Anyone know how much it would cost to get all the seals and o rings for plungers for the T-20? Are all the seal kits the same regardless of year of trans?

The re-seal kit from Recreatives is about 35 bucks I think? It has all o-rings for the plungers as well. You may want to consider getting the double o-ring plungers??

I think that the kit will contain all necessary seals regardless of the year of your T-20.
    Hammers should have warning labels.

Thanks boncrshr, I never got a chance to call RI and was wondering what kind of prices I am looking at...

Do the single o-ring plungers really leak that easily or is it just more reassuring to have the double? (not trying to question you, just curious) Thanks.

        ES,

I'd get the dual plunger seals if you can might as well upgrade while the t-20 is apart. If you need extra oring seals here is the specs on the orings 7/8 x 3/4 x 1/16 #30 orings.

Also when you assemble the t-20 make sure you install the orings after pushing the plunger through the case. If you install the orings first then push the plunger out of the case the orings will get cut by the inner edge of the case.

        Hope this helps

          T-20 Rebuild

$35 sounds cheap compared to a complete rebuild! Also Micmac, I believe you meant to say install the plungers with new O-Rings from the OUTSIDE.? The outside is beveled, the inside is not, and will kill the new o-rings right away. ES- MIKE did a great write-up under "how to's" at the top of the page, definitely a recomended read! i just got seals for mine at the local bearing house.
                output seals (SKF 17184) $4.32 each (X2)
                input seal (SKF 9878) $2.18
pack of #30 o-rings from the plumbing section at lowes for the plungers $4.98 (enough for 4 t-20's with double o-ring plungers)
i forgot to take a shifter o-ring to compare, but a pack of them will also be $4.98 (enough for 16 t-20's)
tube of rtv silicone gasket maker (i use this instead of paper gaskets to seal the case halves together) $6.35

The gray RTV gasket maker works great. I used in on the T-20 in my friend's Max IV and he hasn't had any leak issues at all.

I had sealed one up with RTV and it was a BIG BIG pain in the butt when I had to seperate the cases to put the output seals in that I forgot. I would drop the change on the paper gaskets atleast. I almost whent crazy trying to get the thing back apart, I ordered 5 extras after that.

Did you ever find out what size a specs were on the shifter orings? Trying my best to save some money.

I also just rebuilt my T-20 using the kit from RI. I went ahead and used the paper gaskets and after properly torqueing the case bolts it is sealed tight...no leaks. The reason I used the paper gaskets is because the previous owner used silicone and it was a major mess. He used way too much so it had squeezed into everything and was a pain to remove. Also, one bit that I noticed is the kit will come with the small washers with the dog ears on them. Depending on the year make of the T-20, some used them and some don't. I think the newer T-20's used flat washers instead of the older dog eared ones. Either way you will figure it out, just don't disgard the ones you pull off because you may need to reuse them. Also, for some reason I could not push the plungers through from the inside to the outside to put on the orings, I think the top two plungers with the single oring were the two I had problems with. I don't know if they had been sleeved or the plungers were just too large but they would not push all the way through. I had to wiggle/twist the top plungers back in to keep from cutting the orings. Just do it slowly and it is possible.
