  • T20 broken stud inside case

I have a t20 I opened up to inspect and replace seals and bearings. The max 4 I got was in rough shape so I wasn't supprised to see some things but when I opened 20191025_163214.jpg20191025_163249.jpgthe case. The casing around the stud was cracked. The casing fell off as I was trying to seen how bad it was. What are your thoughts? I thought of using alumiweld but it wont stick to the casing. I just dont want it to leak. It looks like the hole was tapped and a helicoil was installed. I think the previous owners cracked it in the process

My favorite epoxy repair for this type of repair is Marine Tex. It looks like it was heated also. You can pop that oil shield off easily to clean behind it. In extreme cases I’ve drilled out the case and pressed in an aluminum plug then TIG welded into place. Drill and tap when done. The newer IV frame and upgraded ones use lower bolts. If you have studs it would probably not leak if set with red lock tite. Is the coil set well and able to take 35-40 ft lbs of torque?

yeah it was heated as I tried to use alumiweld as someone suggested to try. learned the hard way it will not hold to the cast. I dotn feel its needed to replace the case for this but just want to go for a good secure repair. The trans will go in with bolts not studs. and I believe the coil is done well although I haven't tried to torque on it yet

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you will probably need a new or decent used case half. Don't think there is much fixed what you have, and I'm the guy who tries to fix almost anything

If you are going to install with bolts it needs a permanent repair that won’t break out when installing. I’d replace it or have it bored and plugged to redrill. It’s even difficult to get a nice weld inside the case as the oil keeps coming out of casting when heated.

ok so this transmission just keeps it coming. So on re assembly I noticed the center plate where the thrust washers go is ground out on one side. I have no idea how the heck that happened as this was all from a prior owner. you can see the damage pics on this post I put up in the transmissions section. http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...rebuild-5.html Any thoughts would be appreciated. though im sure that plate will need to be replaced if I can even find one. As for the stud/bolt location it was drilled and tapped hence the cause of the situation I believe. If I can come up with a solution short of replacement of the case half that would be ideal...... but given the current situation this transmission is turning into a nut roll....
