  • are t20 gearboxes watertight?

hi there greetings from uk .
the max ll that i,m looking to buy looks like its been sunk and recovered .
must have been left for years 2 min unused ,as its still in the same place and condition i saw it back then.
the control steering levers are seized.
can water get in the box?.
hoping its just the levers/linkage frozen.
wont be able to disconect linkage to eliminate simple fault before buying.

How long was it under water? They have vents built in the oil fill and water can also get in where the plungers are around the orings. They are not water tight although it would probably take a little while to fill up with water.

not 100% sure that its been sunk but there,s some gravel and fine grit in hull and on engine in odd places.
used to get the same in my pwc,s if they rolled over in shallows in rough water near beach, and drew in sandy water .
may just be off road debris but theres water in hull,
up to axle centres possible rain water.
buying it as a non runner and only going to have a quick look before buying.
not going to be able to see it running so covering all bases.
may give me some room to move price with vendor.
even thought they are very rare in uk dont want to buy a complete shed
may wait for another one to come up if it needs engine+box plus chains, bearings.etc

That's probably just dirt, sand, mud, etc from riding. Mine is full after a good ride. Get stuck real good and you will fling mud everywhere. As for the water, surely it's from rain. If that's the case it's good that the hull is holding water but it's bad because it's probably rusted all of your sprockets, chain, bearings, frame, etc. That's what I would be more worried about. If the T20 wasn't submerged in water it should be find.

Take a look inside through the tranny fluid filler hole...empty the fluid out and see what color it is. Should be the same color as cranberry juice.

              Mark,

You'd be better off assuming the worst with the chains and bearings. I'm not sure they're worth trying to save. They're kind of like tires on a car. If you're not positive they're good, you replace them.

You don't want them to fail in the bush.
