  • Type F ATF

i'm getting all the stuff together so that i'll be ready to build my T-20 when the bands get here. i went to get type F fluid yesterday, and was told by 3 parts stores that it has been superceded by type F-A. anyone else run into this? and is it ok to use F-A?

      Type f

The only place that I could find type f fluid was at Wal-mart. I am not sure if you could run type fa in the tranny.

        Try AMSOIL !!!!!!
        It's the $#!+

I run it in everything I own. The ATF will cover all previous ATF types for most american & import tranny's.

There are so many types of fluids these days.. as automatic transmissions get rediculously complex. It's all about the friction qualities of the fluid and how they react with friction materials in the clutches and band lining. I bet type F requires less force to keep the bands engaged, and can't get any cheaper than walmart.

I have been told that synthetic oils are too slippery for applications with friction material. I believe this applies more to motorcycle wet clutches, where there is a higher horsepower. But it is just a thought.

                t-20 manual specs

The adjustment manual for the t-20 transmission is posted on a the route 6x6 website, and it says to use either type A (which I don't think is made anymore), type F, OR dexron transmission fluid. Apparently these trannys are not very picky, as long as you keep it full, and using a good quality fluid never hurts.

from the factory ri uses type f fluid with a bottle of friction modifier.... type f is a more grippy fluid ....synthitics are way to slippery !!!

i have used both dextron and type f and i have felt a noticable difference in steering feel between the 2 fluids (type f being more grippy) also the friction modifier that ri uses helps reduce band chatter

Just my two cents- I've used the Dexron III that they sell under the NAPA name for years and haven't found any others that I like as well. The T20 works more smoothly with the NAPA stuff, in my opinion, and I don't get band chatter.

Don, Per your input, when I rebuilt my Wolf I used Dex III in my T-20, although I did add the limited slip fluid. I found that it drives nice and smooth, and I can controll turning more easily, it IS LESS GRABBY than it was before I rebuilt it. I think the Max IV's weight will stress the T-20 more, and you will need more stick pressure, so the type F would help. I think it's a matter of personal taste, weight of the machine, engine HP and torque, driving style, etc.... Best as I can tell, neither will damage the tranny at all, and since the fluid is not too expensive, it's not hard to experiment. (Heck, if you siphon it out carefully into the original container, you could re-use it if it's basically new, if your switching back and forth to decide. Be SURE no water is introduced AT ALL, water dissolves the glue used on the friction material from an Auto Tranny and I would expect it would do the same to T-20 Bands)
