  • chain lube? Trans Additive? trans breather?

Ok so I've gotten the Max II project out for a test ride this last weekend and it ran great. I had never seen this thing run so i wanted to get it to that stage before I did much to the running gear.
I've replace most everything involving the engine so my questions start in working on the transmission.

My T20 transmission is Max serial number X500 so it was built around spring of 1970 according to RI.

Question 1) I have heard that the T20 is supposed to have a breather in the top fill plug, well mine doesn't. It may be so old that it was just before they started putting breathers in the plugs I don't know? should I drill a small breather hole in the plug?
Question 2) what chain lube should I use?
Question 3) What additive should I add to the T20
Question 4) the chains seem to be adjusted OK, but I wouldn't know what they look like when they are wrong. how much play should well adjusted chain have? do they chatter or something when they are wrong?
Question 5) I have greased the outer wheel bearings when I had the wheels off. The outer bearings took hardly any grease. I have heard that there are inner bearings grease fittings but I can't find them. Does a 1970's machine have inner grease fittings?

I know the Max machines have changed and evolved over the last 39 years and some of these question might age spacific. In my recent search for a VIN number I have found out the the aluminum VIN tag has been placed a number of different spots over the years.

    All help is alway appreciated!

    1) Are you sure that the top plug doesn't have what looks like copper in the middle of it? It is hard to see especially if the plug is dirty.
    2) Whatever you like. There are plenty available at auto parts store. Do a search on the site to see what others are using.
3)4 oz. of limited slip additive
4)1/2" total deflection (1/4" up and 1/4" down)
5)No inner bearings on that year, just bushings.

If you need more info, just use the search, that's how I answered numbers 3 and 4. You may be surprised at how many answers the search will give you without having to post.

Edit: Here's a picture of a fill plug with the "breather". Look in the upper right hand corner of the picture and on that fill plug you can vaguely make out the copper strands that compose the vent.
