  • Gear down by driven clutch?

I'd like to gear my machine down just a bit. Was thinking about going the 13 tooth on the t20 route but what if I put a bigger diameter driven clutch on my t20? Wouldn't that (at least initially) gear me down? My clutch has pitting on it and was thinking about replacing anyways. I'm probably missing something thats obvious but it seems like it would work.

      bucketobolts ,

BW6 and I talked about this very same thing on the phone. He said you could call Comet , tell them what diameter shaft you have , and they could make one up for you. If I remember correctly, BW6 said a 5:1 ratio would probably be what you need. If I,d known this , I would have went this route instead of taking my T-20 apart and installing the 13 tooth output shafts.

Thanks mudbug!! that's what I wanted to hear. So basically, bigger clutch, bigger belt= lower gearing. I'm on a tight budget and someone gave me a super nice OHV subaru but it's 11hp, should work in a smaller machine if geared down. Not interested in speed.

          belt

I picked up a belt from Bearings and drives that is thinner than standard and seems like it performs better. You coud definitely try it with that 11hp. They should be able to supply by lenghth. I went a bit longer and it seems too loose, but works reaaly nice on Buffalo truck w/20 hp Kohler

            larger secondary

Hi Bucketof bolts, I havent tried my setup out yet but I am pretty sure it is going to work. I have a Skidoo tra primary with a arcticcat secondary. There is a larger yet secondary for the Jag workhorse type sled. As far as the belt you would have to measure what you need and try Dayco or some company like that.

              clutches

There are a variety of spring tensions too.....I've had to switch a few to get the desired effects.. A heavier tension spring would also keep it in low torque longer too......

I have had ideas on the same thing before. Also what if you get a bigger drive clutch, seems like it would get the high end back, assuming the driven will spread apart enough. It seems if you go bigger on drive and driven your whole ratio range will increase on both ends.
