Trying to replace a reverse idle gear in 1991 magnum xmission s/n MR16666
Top case has 4 bolts and one screw removed, plus 4 snap rings. aswell as snap ring of opposite side output shaft. I can see through top case by 1/16 " but won't come off. Is there something i'm missing as the IPC shows nothing else to remove ? could it be bearing friction on the shaft ? need alittle advise before i pry any more ! By the way, this site is a fantastic source of info and some great pictures.

the case has to slid off the bearing or bearing off the output shaft, it took a little prying to open mine up, i tried to stay on oppisite sides of the output shaft at all times, there were also 2 dowel pins locating the case and cover together.

    hope this helps you

Thanks for the advice, i managed to wedge case open to 3/8 " s but no further. I ended up dropping off at local argo dealer who said he would finish "the pounding " and get back to me on it's problem. hopefully this won't be to expensive a job( Ha Ha ). As much as i like tinkering with stuff, i had to walk away from this before i broke something !

        re: splitting

To late for your machine but some advice for the next guy. When splitting any aluminum cases, I always use a heat gun (paint stripper) to heat up the case where the bearing is. The aluminum heats faster than the steel bearing expanding the aluminum before the steel bearing can heat up. I generally throw the steel parts in the freezer a day before reassembly and warm the cases up a little. things tend to go back together fairly easy but you have to be quick.

That's great advice . Somehow i should of thought of it at the time.
Anyway the argo dealer opened it up to find reverse idler gear flopping around on it's shaft. ( bronze bushing gone ). will upgrade to roller bearing style. plus all new seals & bearings. costing around 650 $$$$ OOUCH !!
